“Hey, Kai. Did Ara seem okay to you, all things considered? I mean she’s a mess after all the shocks she’s had to absorb in such a short amount of time.” I plopped down on the couch and dropped my head back against the cushions, closing my eyes for a moment to center myself. “I didn’t want to alarm her, she’s had so much thrown at her, but those tinges of dark in what she just wielded; do we need to be concerned?” Opening my eyes, I twisted my head to glance over at my best friend.

He stood in the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, his expression somber. “Truthfully, I don’t know what to think. It’s great she’s going to be able to protect herself, but with powerful demon blood running through her veins; I just don’t know. We both know the heart of the person plays the biggest role in how you use your magic, but that’s not to say outside influences – and in her case her real father and her mother’s dabbling in the dark – don’t affect those tendencies as well. We’ll keep an eye on her, Wyatt. She’s determined to put a stop to that trio and remain herself. I think she’ll be okay, but we’ll be here for her.”

“I don’t want to lose her, Kai. I love her. I didn’t think I’d ever find that again.”

His lips curled into a knowing smile. “Twenty years is a long time. Adalise wouldn’t have wanted you to stay alone for so long, but she would have approved of your choice.” Strolling into the room, he plopped down in the recliner and kicked up his feet.

“Yeah, she would have. After I tackle some work tomorrow, I’m taking Ara to the mall and then out to dinner. We need to do something normal. Hopefully that will combat her uneasiness about today.”

“You are definitely in love if you are taking her shopping.” Kai propped his arms behind his head and closed his eyes.

I had no doubt. Smiling, I let my eyes drift closed.

“So, what, you two expect me to cook you dinner while you laze in the living room?”

As a huge ass grin tugged at my lips, I popped open my eyes and stared at the beautiful girl standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips, who radiated such strength, loveliness, compassion, and wit. How in the hell had I gotten so lucky twice in my life? She had on a pair of black yoga pants and a blue t-shirt. It didn’t matter what she wore; she always exuded such loveliness. But hopefully buying some new clothes would go a long way to helping her feel a bit more normal as well.

“Merely watching you wield your magic today, Ara, was exhausting.” Not even opening his eyes, Kai answered from where he was slumped in the recliner.

“It was pretty bad ass, huh?” Her face lit up with a self-satisfied smirk, but dimmed slightly a moment later. “But I’m going to be okay, right?”

“You’re going to be fine.
